Northampton Town have won the race to sign Cheltenham Town’s Billy Waters as confirmed by the club website.
The 22-year-old striker was seen as one of the best players at Cheltenham, firstly firing them into the EFL and continuing his form in Sky Bet League Two by being their leading scorer this season by netting 14 times. This also won him the Player of the Season award but that sort of form doesn’t usually go unnoticed by your rivals.
Both Northampton and Plymouth soon became enamoured with Waters and battled to sign him but as reports indicated a few days ago, the Cobblers have won the fight and have now signed the striker for an undisclosed fee. He has signed a three-year deal with Northampton and will now be leading their front line as the club hope to push further up the Sky Bet League One table.
After the transfer was confirmed, Northampton head coach Justin Edinburgh said: “We are delighted to have signed Billy,”
“He was a key target for us and we feel he will provide a good balance to the other strikers we have at the club.”
“Billy is an excellent age, he has hunger and desire to keep his career on its upward curve and we think he will fit in well.”
“He is a mobile striker who knows where the goal is. He plays with his heart on his sleeve, he will run all day and supporters will warm to his all action, committed style of play.”
“He was the player of the season at his former club and a popular figure. He has developed his game significantly over the last couple of seasons and we feel we are signing him at a good age, with a fair amount of experience and we are excited about working with Billy.”
“This is part of an approach we have been developing with the Chairman which looks at younger players with potential to develop alongside our experienced players and we appreciate the backing to be able to do this.”
