Southend: Experienced defender commits to Blues

Sky Bet League One side Southend United have retained the services of John White for one more year.

The experienced defender has become a fan-favourite at Roots Hall since signing on a permanent basis in 2013 and the defender is pleased to have finally signed on the dotted line with the Essex side.

“It’s nice to have got it done and to be able to look forward [to] next season now,” said White to the Essex Echo.

“My family and I are very settled in the area and it would have been a big wrench to up and leave.

“There are always things to think about though and obviously not playing as much as I would’ve liked last season was on my mind.

“But I’m happy to be staying and now the target is for me to play more next season.”

The Blues had been confident of White signing on at Roots Hall but, with the defender making only 17 appearances last season, there was always the possibility of the 30-year-old making a departure.

Southend boss Phil Brown will now be looking to retain the services of Ryan Leonard – who is wanted by Sheffield United – as well as signing his two midfield targets.

The Essex Echo revealed earlier today that the Club were close to signing a former Premier League middle-man who is currently plying his trade in the Sky Bet Championship.

Another target for the Blues is a midfielder who for the past season has been regularly featuring across the border in Scotland’s top flight.
