Wolves will not pursue deal for Derby County forward

Wolves will no longer be attempting to sign Derby County’s Andi Weimann on a permanent deal according to a report from the Express & Star.

Weimann spent the second half of the season on loan with Wolves and was able to impress even though the Black County side failed to get closer to the Sky Bet Championship play-offs like they wanted. Most notably he scored in their 2-1 upset FA Cup victory over Liverpool in what was undoubtedly the highlight of their season.

And after that, it did seem like Wolves were going to push to sign him on a permanent deal. Paul Lambert liked the player and with Weimann not being able to break into the Derby first team anymore, it seemed like a cinch that they would be able to sign him for £1.5m. However this transfer will no longer be happening after the recent overhaul at Molineux.

With Lambert being replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo and reports that transfers are being run by super agent Jorge Mendes, though this has been denied by the club, the deal to sign the Austrian is now off. It now seems like Wolves will be looking to other targets and they may go back to the previous season’s tactic of signing players from Portugal and even if Mendes doesn’t control transfers, it is expected that many of the players coming in are expected to have some sort of link with him. But this does now mean Weimann is on the market for any other interested Championship team.
