Garry Monk, Gibson wish may complicate potential Monk move to Middlesbrough

Gibson wish may complicate potential Monk move to Middlesbrough

Following the sacking of Aitor Karanka in March and their relegation from the Premier League, Middlesbrough are currently looking to appoint a new manager.

Former Leeds United boss Garry Monk and former Derby County boss Nigel Pearson are two men that have been heavily-linked with the job.  However, according to Sunday’s print edition of The Sun, Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson would rather keep current caretaker boss Steve Agnew at the club as assistant manager.

This is likely to complicate any move for Monk or Pearson, as both managers would like to bring in their own team of coaches to work with.  It is understood that Garry Monk would bring in the same backroom team he worked with at Leeds United and Pearson would like to work with Nick Barmby.

Therefore, Gibson’s decision to keep Agnew at the club could move closer to ruling Monk and Pearson out of the running for the Middlesbrough job.

Pearson has been looking for a new job since he was sacked by Derby County back in October.  The former Leicester City manager had only been in charge of the club for five months, but had won only three of his 14 games in charge.  Pearson is also being linked with the vacant Sunderland job.

Garry Monk decided to leave Leeds United at the end of this season, with the club having narrowly missed out on a play-off place.  Monk was very popular with the Leeds United supporters and almost all were shocked to see him leave.

With pre-season set to begin next month, several Championship clubs are still yet to appoint a new manager for the coming season.  Therefore, we will likely see appointments being made in the coming weeks.
