Chesterfield want to sign Rochdale’s former Manchester City trainee

Chesterfield are interested in signing Rochdale winger Donal McDermott this summer, according to Sunday’s print edition of The Sun.

Chesterfield will compete in the Sky Bet League Two next season following their relegation from League One and are already planning for the campaign.  Manager Gary Caldwell is set to stay on and try to lead the club to promotion at the first time of asking.

It is understood that the club are interested in securing the services of Rochdale winger Donal McDermott this summer.  The winger made 21 appearances for Rochdale this season but failed to nail down a place on the wing.  McDermott has been with the League One club since 2015, but could leave the club this summer.

McDermott began his career with Premier League side Manchester City, spending five years with the club.  He was part of the team that won the 2008 FA Youth Cup but his contract was not renewed in 2011.

He has since played for recently-promoted side Huddersfield Town, Bournemouth, Dundalk, Salford City and Ramsbottom United before signing for Rochdale.

McDermott has played for Chesterfield in the past, scoring five goals in 15 games for the club during a loan spell from Manchester City in 2009.  If Chesterfield can agree a deal with Rochdale, it looks as though he will be returning to The Spireites.
