Liverpool legend will not join Newcastle United this summer

Newcastle United are aiming to rebuild their squad ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Rafa Benitez led Newcastle to the Sky Bet Championship title last season, earning them an immediate return to the top flight.

Now the job for the Spanish is keeping them there. Their last season in the Premier League saw them finish 19th, and consequently saw them relegated to the second tier.

It has only been a few weeks of summer and Newcastle United have already been linked with a number of different players.

One of the players they have been linked with was former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

The Spanish keeper played under Benitez at both Napoli and Liverpool, and the pair have an excellent working relationship.

But it seems that despite the links, Pepe Reina has decided to remain in Italy, and not link up with his former boss again.

The Daily Express reports that Reina will turn down a deal to join Newcastle due to not being able to agree personal terms.

This is a big setback for Newcastle United, as they bid to build a squad packed with Premier League experience.

Reina would have fitted the bill perfectly, but it seems that the Sky Bet Championship winners will have to look elsewhere.

The Spanish goalkeeper played 38 times for Napoli in Serie A this season, conceding just 38 goals.
