Wolves set to pip Rangers to the signing of Portuguese defender

Wolves are set to pip Rangers to the signing of Vitoria Setubal’s Fabio Cardoso according to a report from the Daily Record.

Rangers have been looking to sign a lot of players now that they have Pedro Caixinha as head coach and it appeared that they would be able to complete £1m deal for Cardoso. The 23-year-old defender is highly rated and it looked like it was going to be a great coup for a team hoping to challenge for the Scottish Premier League title.

However it now looks like they are going to miss out on Cardoso as Wolves are set to move in and beat them to the signing. They weren’t interested in the player when Paul Lambert was their head coach but the situation has now changed after his departure. Super agent Jorge Mendes, whose influence at Wolves pushed Lambert to the exit door, has recommended the player and with it seeming likely that fellow Portuguese man Nuno Espirito is set to be the next man on the hot seat, it looks like Cardoso will be heading to Molineux rather than Ibrox.

Cardoso started his career at Benfica but while he made many appearances for their reserve team, he was never able to play for the senior side. That’s why the former Portuguese youth international in 2016 moved to Vitoria Setubal. He impressed in his 23 appearances over the last year and now could be set for a big move to Great Britain, whether he decides to move to Wolves or Rangers.
