Peterborough United star hoping for Iran call-up

Ryan Tafazolli was a bright spark in what was generally a poor season for Peterborough United, as they finished 11th in Sky Bet League One.

The central defender signed from Mansfield Town last summer, and impressed at the heart of the Posh defence throughout the season.

And Tafazolli has revealed that he has plans to represent a national team in the near future.

Tafazolli is English born, but qualifies for Iran through his parents.

And he is hoping to attract the attention of former Manchester United coach Carlos Queiroz, who is currently in charge of the Iran national team.

As quoted by the Peterborough Telegraph, Tafazolli said: “One of the Iranian coaches was due to come and watch me play against Bristol Rovers last season, but I was injured and missed the game.”

“I’d love to play for them. but they are flying at the moment. They are the number one ranked team in Asia. If I keep playing well and I improve I will hopefully get my chance.”

Ryan Tafazolli also discussed his first season at Posh, and how he sees the next season going.

He said: “All in all, I did okay, and the defence did okay as a whole. There were a few games last season when we leaked a few goals and we must work harder next season to get more clean sheets. More clean sheets means more wins.”

“I can only grow and become stronger for next season when I also want to score more goals. I scored a few from set-pieces for Mansfield, but not so many last season. It will be an aim of ours to get more goals from defenders.”
