NEWCASTLE UNITED: Rafa Benitez wants reunion with former Liverpool goalkeeper

Rafa Benitez is seeking a reunion with former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, as he looks to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League.

The Spanish manager is quite clearly a fan of the Spanish goalkeeper. He has signed him for two different clubs.

Benitez first signed Reina when he was in charge at Liverpool, and the keeper went on the become a fan favourite at Anfield.

The Newcastle boss then purchased the shot stopper when he took over at Italian club Napoli.

And now Benitez is set to make an offer to reunite the pair again, this time back in the Premier League, and at Newcastle United.

Benitez has stated in interviews that he is looking for Premier League experience in his squad, and few can argue that Pepe Reina provides exactly that.

The Daily Star reports that an offer could be made in the coming days, as Benitez looks to begin the formation of his Premier League squad.

However, when quizzed about the potential signed of Reina, the Newcastle United manager was giving nothing away.

As quoted by the Daily Star, he said: “Pepe is a great player but above all he is a leader in the dressing room.”

“We missed him at Napoli in the year he went to Bayern Munich. He is able to make a difference both on and off the pitch.”

“Would I take him to Newcastle if he left? I respect Napoli, and our club has a lot of goalkeepers who are doing well.”

“We need to be calm, we’ll talk to the club and decide on our targets.”
