Footballer responds to Birmingham boss Redknapp over ‘porn star’ claims

Yesterday Birmingham City boss Harry Redknapp said that he’d find it difficult to potentially recruit free agent defender Benoît Assou-Ekotto due to the latter’s future career preference.

Calling the player that he once signed for Tottenham Hotspurs, and on loan when boss at QPR, “mad” Redknapp said that the obstacle to signing Assou-Ekotto was that the player wanted to move into being more of a ‘playa’ – transitioning from footballer to porn star.

According to a story in The Sun, Redknapp talked of receiving a phone call from someone when he accepted the Birmingham job. Redknapp says that he was offered the Cameroonian defender, going on to say: “Somewhere inside I’m thinking I can get him going again. The only trouble is that he’s admitted he wants to be a porn star.”

Despite this future aim, the Sun said that Redknapp remained hopeful of getting his man, even if it proved to be for just one more season before he sidesteps into his future career choice. Redknapp says: “Maybe I can get another year out of him before he decides to do that [move into the porn industry].”

Now all of that came as a surprise, and one none more so than for the player himself as reported by French publication France Football. In an interview with the French publication, Assou-Ekotto admitted that it was just a joke, and that he doesn’t feel hurt about what was said by Redknapp.

Speaking on the matter, the Cameroonian defender said: “From what I understood, it was in a TV show, the coach Redknapp was asked about the players he would like to recruit. He pulled it out on me, to laugh, and then he moved on. And I did, too, until it came out in France, this weekend.

The laughter stopped, said Assou-Ekotto, when his mother received the news, on France’s Mothers’ Day. Assou-Ekotto said that when his mother discovered the ‘news’ she told him that “she would have preferred another gift.”
