Luton Town: Hibernian join race to sign Hatters target

Scottish Premiership side Hibernian are the latest team to join the race for Luton target Liam Sercombe, according to the Bedfordshire on Sunday.

The U’s finished eighth in the Sky Bet League One table, four points behind Millwall in the final play-off spot.

But goalscoring midfielder Sercombe had a falling out with Oxford United manager Michael Appleton and is now looking at a move away from the Kassam Stadium. However, the Oxfordshire side have triggered the extra year on his contract to ensure they get a fee should he move away.

U’s boss Appleton has now consigned to the fact that he will be losing the midfielder, stating: “We’ve had quite a few enquiries regarding him. No-one has made an offer yet, but I’m expecting one club to shortly.

“We’ve had a lot of people enquire about whether he’s available.”

But Luton have a number of other clubs to compete with for Secombe’s signature, including Charlton Athletic and now Hibernian.

Sky Bet League One side Charlton Athletic are reportedly weighing up a bid in the region of £100-150k for the 27-year-old.

But now the Scottish newspaper the Daily Record are reporting that Hibs boss Neil Lennon is closest to signing the midfielder.

Sercombe has scored 22 goals in his 101 appearances for the League One outfit since signing from Exeter City – a club whom he helped reach League One for the first time in their history.

But the midfielder did not waste any time in becoming a fan-favourite as he scored at Wembley in consecutive season, however in both times the U’s lost their Football League Trophy finals.
