Birmingham City boss Redknapp says Metz star out of reach – bizarre career choice

Derby’s Tyrone Mears crawled past the manager’s office window on his way to secure a deal at Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille. Aston Villa’s Ross McCormack didn’t attend training due to stuck gates. Footballers are a funny breed.

Now, according to The Sun, Harry Redknapp is admitting it will be a tall order to bring in reported target Benoît Assou-Ekotto due to the former Spurs defender’s choice of future career. Assou-Ekotto, who Redknapp has signed for Spurs and QPR, is wanting to swap dribbling, shooting and ball control in football to become a porn star.

Telling of receiving a phone call from someone upon accepting the Birmingham job, Redknapp says that he was offered the Cameroonian defender, a player he referred to as “mad.” He goes on to saying that his interest was piqued in the 33-year-old saying: “Somewhere inside I’m thinking I can get him going again. The only trouble is that he’s admitted he wants to be a porn star.”

So, it seems that for some the move into coaching is the way forward, staying in football as the ‘collect their badges’. But not for Assou-Ekotto who is aiming for a total career change altogether.

Despite this future aim, the Sun say that Redknapp remains hopeful of getting his man, even if it proves to be for just one more season before he sidesteps into his future career choice. Redknapp says: “Maybe I can get another year out of him before he decides to do that [move into the porn industry].”

Benoît Assou-Ekotto was brought back to French football by Saint-Éttienne in July 2015 after Spurs chose not to extend his near eight year stay at the London club. He moved on a free transfer to FC Metz in mid-August last year, making a total of 18 Ligue 1 appearances, providing just the single assist.
