Claudio Ranieri – what could he bring to Leeds United

Ranieri’s first job outside of Italy was when he moved to Spain to manage Valencia. During his time at Valencia, he earned them qualification into the Champions League, as well as winning the Copa Del Rey in 1999.

His performances at Valencia attracted the attention of Atletico Madrid, who he joined in late 1999. His time at the club was a real struggle, as they nearly entered administration, and struggled to perform on the pitch. When on the verge of relegation, Ranieri resigned before he could be sacked. The Madrid club were relegated later that season.

Claudio Ranieri was introduced to the English game in 2000, when he took over at Chelsea. Of course, this was pre-Abrahmovic, and Chelsea were not a particularly successful club. Ranieri helped them qualify for the UEFA League in his first season in charge. He completely reshaped the team, and is the manager responsibly for bring club legend Frank Lampard to the club. After Abrahmovic took over the club in 2003, Ranieri was given a much larger budget, and he delivered. He helped Chelsea to finish second in the Premier League, and also guided them to the Champions League Semi Finals. Despite a successful season, he was replaced in 2004 by Jose Mourinho.

Ranieri returned to Valencia for a second spell in June 2004. He had big shoes to fill, after Rafa Benitez had guided the club to a La Liga and UEFA Cup double. The Italian failed to fill those shoes, and following a disappointing few months, Ranieri was sacked in early 2015.

It took Claudio Ranieri two years to get back into management. His next role was to see his return to Italy, where he joined Parma. He helped the club escape relegation before being linked with a number of high profile jobs. At the end of the season, Parma announced that Ranieri would not be their manager for the next season.

Just a few months later, Ranieri joined Italian giants Juventus. Although he did not win a trophy during his time at the club, Ranieri enjoyed several top three finished, ensuring that they consistently qualified for the Champions League. Ranieri was sacked in May 2009 by the Juventus board.
