Sheffield United will pursue Charlton Athletic star

Despite having an opening bid for Ricky Holmes rejected by Charlton Athletic, Sky Bet League One champions Sheffield United will pursue the midfielder, according to KentLive.

Ricky Holmes is seen as fundamental to Charlton Athletic next season, and Karl Robinson rejected a bid for their top scorer earlier this week.

The Charlton boss confirmed that new contract talks would take place with Holmes in the coming weeks, but persistence from Sheffield United is thought to be turning the head of the Charlton man.

Ricky Holmes was voted as Charlton Athletic’s player of the year this season. In 35 Sky Bet League One games for the Addicks, Holmes found the back of the net an impressive 15 times, as well as setting up eight goals for his team mates.

One contributing factor that could see Holmes want to move to Bramall Lane is the history he shares with Blades boss Chris Wilder.

Holmes played under Wilder during Northampton Town’s successful league winning season in 2015/16, when they came out on the top of Sky Bet League Two.

Of course, Sheffield United will be playing in the Sky Bet Championship next season, and while just last year Holmes was plying his trade in League Two, he is more than capable of performing to a good level in the second tier of English football.

Sheffied United are expected to make another bid for the player in the coming days, and again it is expected that it shall be rejected by Charlton Athletic.
