Retained List: McCarthy lets seven go at Ipswich Town

Sky Bet Championship side Ipswich Town have today revealed the names of their retained list for next season. A total of five first-team players have been told that they can go. They include one regular starting defender, although it was already known that he was leaving for personal reasons.

The remaining names told they can leave Ipswich won’t be huge shocks for supporters and some to be truthful will be quite pleased about some of them. Mick McCarthy remains in discussions with two more players over keeping them at Portman Road, whilst two have been offered new contracts in the hope that they’ll remain a Tractor Boy.

Scottish central defender Christophe Berra departs after four seasons with the Suffolk-based club. He made the move from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2013 but did inform the manager of his intent to leave once his contract expires. It is likely that he’ll move back closer to his family in Scotland, with Hearts being mentioned as a possible destination. Jonathan Douglas has been the subject of criticism from fans whenever he has played and has now be freed up to leave. Giles Coke has suffered badly with injuries and can also leave the club. Paul Digby is another departure and he has already linked up with Mansfield Town in Sky Bet League Two. Out of favour striker Leon Best, plus youngsters Jacob Marsden and Joe Robinson all leave too.

Kundai Benyu impressed out on loan with Aldershot Town as they reached the Vanarama National League play-offs and McCarthy has offered him a new deal. He’ll be hoping to have more impact on the first-team next season. Harry Wright is another to be offered an extension. Jordan Spence and Steven Taylor are both out of contract but McCarthy has said that he wants to keep them both. So discussions will take place at some stage.
