Retained List: Big names allowed to depart relegated Blackburn

It has certainly been a season to forget at Blackburn Rovers. They have now issued their retained list, which is a step required for them to look to the future as they look to prepare for life in Sky Bet League One. Tony Mowbray has revealed one big surprise on that retained list however.

A long-serving midfield player exits, in addition to a few more experienced names that should’ve have too much trouble in finding themselves a new club. Mowbray clearly feels as though changes are needed to bring some freshness to his Ewood Park squad at Blackburn.

The most notable name to be leaving is that of Jason Lowe. He played just shy of 200 times for the club and was a virtual guaranteed starter last season whenever he was fit or free of suspension. He mainly played in central midfield, but often played at right back earlier in the campaign too. His versatility certainly makes him an asset. Danny Guthrie also enjoyed plenty of football under Mowbray but he has told he is free to leave. The same applies to former Reading man Hope Akpan. Adam Henley departs after an injury fuelled campaign, whilst veteran centre backs Wes Brown and Gordon Greer exit the club as well. Completing the list are youngsters Joshua Askew and Ramirez Howarth.

Mowbray has made it clear that he wishes to discuss new contracts with Connor Mahoney and Lewis Travis as well. It has officially been titled as ‘offers of re-engagement;, which assumes that the manager has made it clear to the players he wishes to speak to them. The pair may wish to explore all options first.

Released: Jason Lowe, Adam Henley, Hope Akpan, Danny Guthrie, Gordon Greer, Wes Brown, Joshua Askew & Ramirez Howarth.

Offers of re-engagement made: Connor Mahoney & Lewis Travis.
