The Sun is reported that David Wagner will leave his role as Huddersfield Town head coach, if they fail to win promotion out of the play-offs this season. The Terriers head into tonight’s second leg with Sheffield Wednesday with the scores level after a 0-0 draw in the opening leg on Sunday.
A series of clubs have been linked with a move for Wagner in recent times given the success he has enjoyed since his appointment in West Yorkshire. He is a known friend of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, and is desperate to pit his wits against his former work colleague in the top flight next season.
Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, who have qualified for next season’s Champions League, are being strongly linked with the German as their next head coach. They currently have talented 29-year-old Julian Nagelsmann at the helm, but the Mirror understands that Borussia Dortmund want him to replace Thomas Tuchel this summer.
Norwich City have often been touted as a possible destination for Wagner as well. The Canaries recently took Stuart Webber to the club, from Huddersfield, to become their new sporting director. Therefore, the link with Wagner is hardly a surprise but a return to Germany could possibly interest Wagner more, especially if Champions League forward is offered as well. If Wagner does move on, the club would consider Steve McClaren for the role.
Nevertheless, he is fully focused on the trip to Hillsborough tonight and looking to get his side into the top flight against all of the odds. Not only will Sheffield Wednesday have something to say about that, but waiting finalists Reading too. Last night, they defeated play-off favourites Fulham 1-0 in the second leg thanks to a Yann Kermorgant penalty early into the second half.
