Leeds United star receives summer international call-up

After a promising season, Leeds United midfielder Ronaldo Vieira has been called up for England Under-20 duty for the first time. He has been named in a 18-man squad for the Toulon Tournament, with their fixtures taking place from May 29th.

Although Guinea Bissau-born Vieira has often spoken of his commitment to playing for Portugal, where he was raised, he never completely ruled out representing England either. After living in the nation for several years, he has now been given his first chance to impress on the international stage. He has only officially been a professional footballer for just over a year.

He was handed his Leeds by then manager Steve Evans in the final game of the 2015/16 campaign away to Preston North End. In the corresponding season, under head coach Garry Monk, he made a total of 38 appearances as they narrowly missed out on a spot in the Sky Bet Championship play-offs.

England, managed by Neil Dewsnip, face-off against Japan, Cuba and Angola in the group stages, starting in a few weeks’ time. Many other players from Championship clubs have been called upon as well. Andre Dozzell of Ipswich Town and George Hirst from Sheffield Wednesday being two of the more standout names.

The reigning champions of the competition are in fact England after defeating France in the final last year. That was officially the England Under-21 team at the time, so the likes of Jordan Pickford, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond were in the starting eleven which began that particular game.
