Aitor Karanka linked with route back into English football management

The Express & Star understands that there are big reports linked Wolverhampton Wanderers with Aitor Karanka as they ponder a new head coach appointment. Although Paul Lambert is still officially in charge at Molineux, his future is in big doubt because of the intended transfer policy at the club this summer.

Karanka has been out of work since being sacked by Boro in March, with the club struggling to keep their place in the Premier League. That relegation was confirmed last week, but Karanka proved his effectiveness in the Championship but guiding the Riverside Stadium club out of the second-tier last season.

Wolves owners Fosun are thought to want to have a new man lined up before decided to part way with Lambert. The club want super-agent Jorge Mendes to have the final say over transfers this summer, something with Lambert understandably is not keen on agreeing too.

It strikes as a similar situation to last summer when Kenny Jackett was in charge at Molineux. He remained in charge for over a week despite there being big reports stating that he would be replaced. Walter Zenga would then be appointed less than a day after Jackett’s sacking was confirmed. With Lambert unlikely to want to stay based on the previously mentioned terms, it looks as though Wolves are searching for head coach number four inside a year.

Karanka and Mendes have worked together in the past, which is perhaps why such a link has materialised. The 43-year-old Spaniard is one of many names being linked with the job, despite Lambert still being under employment in the role itself.
