Wigan Athletic: The Top Three Manager Favourites

2. Michael Appleton (3/1)

Michael Appleton is the current manager of Oxford United and has had an impressive 2016/17 season which saw his newly promoted side finish 8th, 4 points off sixth place Millwall, accumulating a total of 69 points.

Appleton led his side to an impressive FA Cup run this season. In the fourth round, he beat Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United by 3 – 0, and almost got into the sixth round of the competition, before being kicked out by Premier League opposition, Middlesbrough.

On the 4th July 2014 Appleton was appointed the manager of the U’s, and in his first season finished 13th in Sky Bet League Two. However, in the 2015/16 season, Oxford finished in the second automatic promotion spot behind Northampton and reached the final of the Football League Trophy (Checkatrade trophy), which is a feat he achieved once again in the 2016/17 season.

Before being appointed the manager of Oxford United, he had previous managerial stints at Blackburn, Blackpool, and Portsmouth, as well as once being the caretaker manager of West Bromwich Albion.
