Retained List: Grimsby allow club legend to leave

A total of five players have been released by Grimsby Town, with their retained list being issues earlier today. Manager Russell Slade spent yesterday is discussions with his squad, with a few other out of contract players still in discussions with the club.

The Mariners ended their first season back in Sky Bet League Two in 14th place, but it was certainly a disruptive season given the large among of managerial changes they experienced. Nevertheless, Slade is back at Blundell Park and is making plans to make Grimsby a force towards the top of the table next season.

Veteran Craig Disley is the highest profile name to be leaving the club. Given he is 35, it is perhaps not a big, big surprise, but for Grimsby fans this was a day they didn’t really want to arrive. He only started 15 league games last season however, scoring in the defeats at Barnet and Colchester. He departs after six years with the club. Josh Gowling has spent the last few seasons with the club too and he is another to be shown the door. He started 17 league games over this past season. Dan Jones, Ashley Chambers and Gavin Gunning completes the departure list.

Player of the Year Danny Andrew unsurprising has been offered a new deal in the hope that he’ll stay. Key duo Shaun Pearson and Ben Davies has also been offered extensions and negotiations continue. The club also ‘hope to engage’ with experienced defender Danny Collins in a bid to keep him too. Young Harry Clifton will be staying after the club triggered a one-year contract extension option. Max Wright and Josh Venney will both be invited back to participate in pre-season training.
