Retained List: Two released but Colchester offer extensions to 10

Sky Bet League Two outfit Colchester United have today become the latest club at their level to confirm their retained list. Two defenders have been told that they are free to depart, with the ten remaining out of contract players all being offered new deals.

Therefore, this is certainly one of the more routine lists that have been submitted so far in the EFL. This suggests that John McGreal is at least very clear on what he wants for Colchester United next season. They ended the previous season one point outside the play-offs, so clearly they are not too far away.

26-year-old Matthew Briggs has been told to find himself a new club. Injuries have certainly halted his progress this season in terms of playing more than the 15 times that he did. The former Millwall man will now focus himself on getting fit in time for pre-season, and finding a new employer. Finally, experienced defender Lloyd Doyley also exits the club. The 34-year-old only signed last October but played just three times, mainly acting as cover.

That means everyone else who is still yet to sign on has at least been offered an extension by McGreal. They are headlined by top scorer and star striker Chris Porter. He recently told the Colchester Gazette that he be ‘happy to stay if the deal is right’. Negotiations continue. Dean Brill, Richard Brindley, Tom Eastman, Lewis Kinsella, Kane Vincent-Young, George Elokobi, Charley Edge, Diaz Wright and Drey Wright are all players that McGreal wishes to keep on board and have been offered fresh terms.

Released: Matthew Briggs & Lloyd Doyley.

Offered extensions: Dean Brill, Richard Brindley, Tom Eastman, Lewis Kinsella, Kane Vincent-Young, George Elokobi, Charley Edge, Diaz Wright, Drey Wright & Chris Porter.
