Charlton, QPR and Portsmouth interested in Swindon Town defender

Charlton Athletic, Queens’ Park Rangers, Portsmouth and Ipswich are understood to be interested in relegated Swindon Town’s Nathan Thompson.

A duo of Sky Bet Championship and Sky Bet League One sides are looking to bolster their defence, and are considering to make a move for Swindon Town’s skipper, Nathan Thompson, according to The News Shopper.

Thompson’s main position is as a centre-back but can play as a right-back in a secondary role if required. The defender made 36 appearances last season across all competitions.

Swindon Town finished 22nd in the Sky Bet League One last season, accumulating only 44 points which will see The Robins play in Sky Bet League Two for the 2017/18 campaign.

It is understood that after a nine-year stay with the Wiltshire outfit, Thompson has made clear that he will not be signing another contract in the summer window, and will be looking elsewhere to play his football. His market value is understood to be estimated around £255,000 but will move on a free in the summer.

Despite the relegation of his side, the consistent performer for the Great Western outfit has not gone unnoticed and his experience and blooding in the English Football League is viewed as a valuable asset.

Since beginning his senior career with Swindon Town, where he has played both League One and League Two football, the 26-year-old has made a total of 185 appearances, 90 of those as a centre-back and 76 of those as a right-back. No doubt the experience that Thompson has in both those positions in both the third and fourth division is an attractive trait.
