Retained List: Defender retirement among the exits at Newport

It has been a very busy day at Newport County. Firstly they appointed Michael Flynn as their permanent manager after he guided them to safety in Sky Bet League Two. Also, they’ve just revealed the names on their retained list as well.

In total, eight players have been told that their Newport contracts will not be extended and they depart Rodney Parade for the final time. Following individual meetings earlier today, these players were shown the door, but talks remain with many others with the remainder of the squad.

Darren Jones is the headline name on that list, and the 33-year-old has also retired from professional football as well. He made 29 league appearances as the Exiles avoided relegation into the National League on the final day. He has spent the last three seasons of his career with the club.

The remaining names couldn’t be described as too shocked to see they’re leaving the club considering the limited amount of game time they’ve collectively enjoyed. Jack Compton started just two league games over the past season and the midfield has been told he can depart. Paul Bignot actually started ten league games and the 31-year-old defender ends his second spell with the club. Also, young Finlay Wood played just 19 minutes of league football and he’s the last of those with game time to leave. Completing the released names are Liam Angel, Marcus Beauchamp, Tom Meechan, Kieran Parselle and Finlay Wood.

Released: Liam Angel, Marcus Beauchamp, Paul Bignot, Jack Compton, Darren Jones, Tom Meechan, Kieran Parselle & Finlay Wood.

UPDATE (17TH May 2017)

Craig Reid, Ryan Bird and Mitch Rose have also been released by the club following discussions with manager Michael Flynn. Midfielder Mark Randall has also been transfer listed. Duo Jazzi Barnum-Bobb and Ben Tozer will be staying after the club triggered one-year options to extend their respective stays.
