Charlton Athletic in pole position to beat Sheffield United to MK Dons midfielder

Charlton Athletic are in pole position to secure the services of Ben Reeves for the upcoming season, fending off League One champions, Sheffield United.

Milton Keynes’ Dons midfielder, Ben Reeves, has been provided with a serious offer from Charlton Athletic, according to the News Shopper.

Reeves contract runs out in the summer for the Buckinghamshire outfit, and it is understood that he is not willing to renew his contract for the Stadium mk side, and is looking elsewhere for the 2017/18 season.

Karl Robinson admires the 25-year-old, and allegedly attempted to buy the player in the January transfer window, but struggled to persuade MK Dons to let the player go. The midfielder joined the Dons back in 2013, and was signed by Charlton’s manager Robinson when he was based at the Buckinghamshire side.

It is understood that other sides are interested in Reeves, including a selection of Championship and League One sides, including Sky Bet League One 2016/17 champions, Sheffield United. However, Charlton Athletic are in pole position to have the midfielder wearing their shirt for the start of the season.

The News Shopper spoke to Reeves agent, John Sorzano of Omni Sports, who stated that Reeves holds Charlton’s manager in high regards and admires the size of Charlton Athletic as a club, and the project to return the Addicks to the higher echelons of the football pyramid.

“The interest is there from Charlton”, Sorzano said.

“Ben is contemplating it, he knows Karl quite well and believes in the project.

“He has a fantastic relationship with Karl. It’s something he’s really considering and that’s why he wants time to mull it over.

“He definitely holds Karl in high regard and respects Charlton because it’s a big club in English football. We all believe they should be back in the Premier League.

“A firm offer has been made and it’s a very good one for the level that Charlton are at now.”

It is understood that Reeves has already been at Charlton’s training ground, Sparrows Lane, based in New Eltham and is set to continue talks with Robinson and CEO Katrien Meire.

Sorzano added: “Several clubs in the Championship have been monitoring Ben. Two of them have put offers in, but he wasn’t jumping at them because of the location.

“Karl’s a wonderful manager, and Ben understands his system and what he’s looking to do.”
