Brighton could lose key player to Premier League leaders

Brighton & Hove Albion could be set to lose goalkeeper David Stockdale to Premier League leaders Chelsea this summer, according to the Daily Star.

It is understood that Chelsea will be looking for a back-up goalkeeper for Thibaut Courtois this summer and have set their sights on Brighton’s Stockdale.  Chelsea’s current back-up Asmir Begovic is expected to move to Bournemouth this summer.

Stockdale has been a key player for Brighton in the Championship this season, making 44 appearances and helping Brighton win promotion to the Premier League.  The goalkeeper has conceded only 39 goals this season, keeping 20 clean sheets in the process.

Beginning his career in the lower leagues with York City and Darlington, Stockdale moved to Fulham in 2008.  However, after not much first-team football and several loan spells, he signed for Brighton in 2014.

Stockdale quickly became Brighton’s first-choice goalkeeper, missing only four Championship games in his first two seasons with the club.

This season, Stockdale has been a rock at the back for his club and has been a vital part of Brighton winning promotion to the Premier League this season.  If Brighton are to avoid relegation next season,  it is likely that Stockdale will play a big part in achieving this.

However, the goalkeeper’s contract expires this summer and Chelsea are interested.  The Premier League leaders went in for Stockdale in January, but the deal stalled.

If Stockdale does choose to sign for Chelsea this summer, it is unlikely he will see much first-team football and this could impact his decision.
