Derby County head coach Gary Rowett has told the Derby Telegraph that he believes his team are getting closer to how he wants them to play.
The Rams have had a disappointing season, with Rowett being their third full time manager this year, but were able to send their fans home happy in their final game at the iPro Stadium this season. In their match against Wolves, they were able to run out as 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Dave Nugent, Bradley Johnson and Craig Bryson, with Ben Marshall getting the goal for Wolves. Derby were helped by the fact Ivan Cavaleiro was sent off in the first half.
Rowett was delighted with the result and the way they played getting the win as he said that this was closer to the style of play that he wants from this team going into next season. It certainly gave Derby fans a lot of hope as they will want better from their team next time around.
He said: “In all fairness, I think the players have been right at it in all the games bar the Brentford game, in truth. They have given us the effort,”
“I was pleased. We had the bit between our teeth and showed the supporters in our last home game a little bit of what’s to be expected next season.”
“There have been things tactically and technically we want doing differently and I felt against Wolves was probably the closest we have got to how we want to play.”
“We didn’t over-pass the ball, we didn’t over-play. We were always trying to penetrate with runs and passes.”
“We had better width and better threat from the wide players. When the ball went wide, we got bodies in the box.”
“How many goals have we scored from crosses this season? I wouldn’t imagine too many, and so I was really pleased about the way the players did that.”
