Newcastle United to compete with West Ham for €8m French defender

Newcastle United are set to compete with West Ham United for the signature of Saint-Etienne’s Kévin Malcuit according to a report from French publication France Football.

The Magpies confirmed their promotion back to the Premier League on Monday night with a big win over Preston North End but now that the celebrations have subsided, it’s time to get on to the business of improving their squad otherwise they might end up back down in the Sky Bet Championship next year.

They are looking to improve their defence and in particular find some competition for DeAndre Yeldin so that they have enough depth for what is sure to be a tough return to the top tier. And in a move that may alarm some Newcastle fans considering the mixed time they had signing players from this country when Alan Pardew was in charge, they are looking across the English Channel to find their new man.

The player they have been looking at closely over the last few weeks is Kévin Malcuit who is currently contracted to Saint-Etienne. He has been playing very well for the French club and could now be set for a big move to the Premier League. Newcastle will face competition if they want to sign him though as West Ham are also interested as they look to sign a replacement for Sam Byram. But either side will have to pay up as Saint-Etienne rate Malcuit’s value as higher than €8m as they have already turned down offers of that value.
