Garry Monk calls defeat to Burton Albion unfair

Leeds United head coach Garry Monk has told the Telegraph and Argus that he believed their 2-1 loss to Burton Albion was unfair.

The West Yorkshire side were hoping to bounce back after a defeat to Wolves on Easter Monday saw them got knocked out of the Sky Bet Championship play-offs but ended up losing again, with the gap between them and 6th placed Fulham growing to three points.

Most of the action took place in the last 15 minutes, with all the goals coming in that part of the game. Marvin Sordell scored at the 75th minute mark when he curled the ball into the bottom corner and they doubled that lead just a few minutes later when Michael Kightly struck. There was potential for a comeback when Kyle Bartley was able to score from close range, but it was not to be and Leeds’ promotion hopes now hang on a thread.

After the game, Monk called the result unfair, saying: “We are disappointed,”

“I think it is an extremely unfair result on my players to be honest.”

“Second half there was only one team on the front foot. We started it extremely well and we were pushing and looking the most dangerous team.”

“The goal came right against the run of play and it was a mistake from ourselves and they got the goal from it. From there we lost our composure a bit. I think it was the shock of them scoring when we were on the front foot.”

“They got a second in that short period and we had to fight right to the end. We perhaps didn’t have the right quality in certain situations but we didn’t deserve to lose that game.”
