Match Report: Peterborough United 4-2 Bristol Rovers

The Posh’s last home game of the season became quite the success as a 4-2 victory knocks Bristol Rovers from achieving a spot in the play-offs.

The hosts made just one change, introducing Jack Baldwin to their starting XI. The Pirates made three changes to their squad including Jermaine Easter on for Luke James. The 35-year-old last made it into the starting lineup back in January against Charlton Athletic.

First half:

Bristol Rovers were dominating, but Peterborough took the lead after 13 minutes of play with a goal from promising youngster, Leonardo Da Silva Lopes who fired the ball home in the bottom corner. The 18-year-old has made two assists out of 36 league appearances and has made his debut goal for the first team.

The visitors were given an opportunity to equalise when Byron Moore was taken down in the box by Da Silva Lopes. Ellis Harrison was to take the penalty, but his low shot was in the hands of Luke McGee.

At the half an hour mark, the Posh strengthened their lead when Marcus Maddison met Tom Nichols’ pass, where his right-footed shot flew over Joe Lumley – giving Nichols’ his second assist of the game.

Second half:

The Pirates attempted to find a goal to challenge the hosts, but Billy Bodin’s chances failed to meet the goal. Peterborough scored their third goal of the game, the second goal for Da Silva Lopes. His low shot was fired underneath Joe Lumley, who failed to save.

Bristol Rovers made a double substitution with Joe Partington and Ellis Harrison off for James Clarke and Rory Gaffney respectively.

The Posh secured their victory with an assist from Maddison allowed Craig Michail-Smith to fire home, making it his 104th goal for the club. Maddison was then taken off for Andrea Borg, and received a standing ovation for his efforts in the game. Ryan Broom was the Pirates’ final substitute for Bob Harris.

With 5 minutes of play left in the second half, substitute Rory Gaffney broke the Posh’s chances of a clean sheet with a low shot, firing past McGee. Four additional minutes were added and Gaffney’s crisp finish doubled the score for the Pirates.

Where do the teams stand in the league table?

Peterborough remain 11th in the league table and will finish 11th this season, but Bristol Rovers are pushed down to 10th. Oxford United overtake the pirates on goal difference after beating Millwall 3-0.

No chance for the Pirates for play-offs…

After a victory at the Memorial Stadium when Bristol Rovers took on Oldham Athletic, two wins in the next two matches would give them a chance at play-offs under the condition that Millwall and Southend’s performance flopped and began losing their matches.

Millwall and Southend lost their matches to Oxford United and Shrewsbury Town respectively. If Bristol Rovers were to win at the ABAX stadium, they would be 8th in the table, just underneath Southend on goal difference. However, if Southend and Millwall were to lose their last game of the season, the Pirates would just slot into 6th, joining Bradford City, Scunthorpe United and Fleetwood Town.

Bolton Wanderers are in danger of being put into play-offs if they lose their match to Peterborough next Saturday. Fleetwood Town are two points below the Trotters and a win against Port Vale could give them automatic promotion in the Championship.

What’s going on in the last game of the season?

Peterborough will take on Bolton Wanderers at the Macron Stadium whereas Bristol Rovers host their last game against Millwall. Both matches kick-off at 12pm.
