Former Leeds United and Liverpool star linked with managerial vacancy

Harry Kewell, who played over 150 times for Leeds United, is a strong contender to become the new manager of A-League side Newcastle Jets, according to The World Game. The 38-year-old is out of work after being fired by Watford recently, where he was their Under-23 manager.

Mark Jones was sacked by the Jets following a long run of disappointing results and the club hope to confirm a successor within the next three weeks. Other English interest in the role comes from another former Leeds United and Liverpool player in the form of striker Robbie Fowler. Teddy Sheringham, who has managed in the EFL with Stevenage, is also keen on the job. Kewell therefore faces competition, with over 50 applicants believed to have applied.

Kewell was sacked by the Vicarage Road club earlier this month following a poor run of results. He is now looking to get back into the game and is targeting his first senior managerial position as soon as possible. Heading back to the A-League would present him with a realistic chance of doing so, especially considering his status. He has experience of playing in the league too from his time at Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart. He ended his playing career in 2014.

Kewell, born in Sydney, is best known for his time at Elland Road, where he came through the youth team into the first team setup, making his debut in 1996 against Middlesbrough. He went on to make a big name for himself with the Whites, helping them reach the Champions League as well as many other individual records. A move to Liverpool followed, where he won more major honours such as the Champions League itself in 2005, and also the FA Cup a year later.
