Burton Albion head coach Nigel Clough has told the Burton Mail that he believes the side are still a long way from safety.
The Brewers main aim going into their first ever season in the Sky Bet Championship was simply to stay in it and they are inching incredibly close to doing that. They are currently four points above 22nd placed Blackburn Rovers and should they beat Leeds United with other results going their way, another season in the second tier of English football will be secure.
However while they could end up getting their safety this weekend, Clough is still rather pessimistic and believes that their place in this league could still be a long time away. He believes that with the Championship being very unpredictable, anything could still happen and one of those things could easily be Burton being dragged into the relegation zone.
In the pre-match press conference, he said: “It feels a long way away, it really doesn’t feel like that.”
“We know that there are still three games to go. With the unpredictability of the results in the last few weeks, it shows it’s unlikely that it will be done on Saturday.”
“It could be going into the last two, or even the last game here against Reading, with us needing something.
“All we can do is look after ourselves and hope somebody will do us a favour – but we are not relying upon it.”
“It’s a huge game for both teams at different ends of the table, with them slipping out of the play-off places,”
“I don’t think they’ve had that bad a run, it’s just that Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham have done incredibly well lately.
“I’ve read Garry Monk’s comments. He’s keen for them to have a go in the last three games and see if they can get back in there.”
