Newcastle will be beaten on contract terms for Icelandic international

Newcastle’s return to the Premier League at the first time of asking is all but confirmed, such is the gap between themselves and Huddersfield who are leading the chasing pack. Their eyes are scanning the market for talent but the Sunday Express says they’ll be priced out of one target.

The player concerned is Swansea’s Icelandic international Gylfi Sigurdsson who the Express say “is keen on move on from South Wales even if Swansea are successful and maintain their Premier League status.”

Sigurdsson moved to current side Swansea nearing the end of July 2014 from Spurs for a fee of around £8.6 million and has gone on to make 126 appearances for the South Wales side, scoring 36 times and providing 28 assists.

Sigurdsson’s class is said to have drawn the interest of Newcastle United who the Express mention “are said to be interested” but they face defeat in their pursuit due to the figures said to have been bandied around.

Whilst the Magpies would have no problem meeting a £multi-million transfer fee, the Express say that they will face defeat to Ronald Koeman’s Everton with Benitez’s Newcastle not being able to match the reported £140,000-per-week salary that Everton are said ready to offer.

Newcastle continue their Sky Bet Championship campaign tomorrow against Ipswich at Portman Road and face three further games against an improving Preston (home), mid-table Cardiff (away) and tricky Barnsley (home). However, a win against Ipswich will be three points closer to promotion that could very well be sealed in their next match against Preston North End at St James’ Park.
