Ipswich: Blues boss wanted to reunite with former winger

Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy wanted to sign Burton Albion winger Michael Kightly, according to Green’Un.

The Tractor Boys travel to Burton Albion on Good Friday looking to bounce back from their disappointing 3-1 defeat at Fulham last weekend.

The Blues have won just once in their last ten games, a statistic that makes many Town supporters wince.cCarthy wanted to reunite

McCarthy wanted to reunite with the 31-year-old winger according to today’s reports.

Having been signed at Wolves from non-league Grays Athletic for £25,000, the winger helped Wolves in their promotion to the Premier League. But tomorrow’s meeting will see McCarthy and Kightly face each other, with the winger currently on-loan from Burnley.

Speaking prior to his side’s trip to Burton Albion, McCarthy said: “The first day he came into training [at Wolves], two or three lads were saying ‘who the hell is that?’

“He really lit the place up and I am glad to see him back playing.

“I was trying to get him here for a while, it didn’t work, and we took Tom Lawrence which was no hardship.

“But he [Kightly] has been desperate to go out and play and he has done well really.”

Also in the Brewers’ squad is former Tractor Boy Luke Varney. The former Town striker departed Portman Road in January after his short-term contract came to an end.

“He [Varney] was brilliant, he was such a great kid, everyone loved him as a player and a personality,” spoke McCarthy.

“He did his Achilles at Norwich and we kept him here, put him up, got him fit, and he repaid us.

“He got the winner at Derby and he contributed a  lot on the pitch and certainly off it.”
