Presenting the inside scoop on the latest Football League news

Three Talking Points from League One this weekend

One team were confirmed to be promoted, two others managed to keep relegation at bay for yet another match day. All in all it was an eventful weekend in the third tier with just four games left of the season remaining.

The Blades are going up

John Fleck and Leon Clarke made certain that Sheffield United fans were celebrating promotion on the pitch at Sixfields at the end of Saturday’s fixture. Chris Wilder’s men have been clearly the best side in the league this season, with Billy Sharp at the front of it. The “Fat lad from Sheffield” as he has dubbed himself has recently acquired the League One player of the season award thanks to his 26 goals this season.

Scunthorpe have steadied the ship

At one point the Iron looked nailed on favourites to win the league but have dropped off so now only the play offs are a viable option for promotion. Even that was in jeopardy until Saturday’s victory over 2nd place Bolton Wanderers helped them get back on their feet. Josh Morris’ cross in gave David Mirfin the perfect opportunity to head in, making sure Scunny got a vital 3 points. They are now 4 points clear inside the play offs, and were blessed as Southend lost to Charlton, giving them more room to breath.

Chesterfield and Coventry aren’t going down without a fight

It could be argued that both Chesterfield and Coventry have looked relegated for a number of months now. With just 4 games left, still neither sides are down after their respective 1-0 victories against Port Vale and Peterborough United. The bubble may be burst for the Spirites as well as the Sky Blues with both having tough opposition on Good Friday.
