Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson reveals his idol

Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson has revealed his idol in a recent interview with Four Four Two.

After signing on an initial season-long loan deal from Torino last summer, Jansson has recently agreed to make the move permanent this summer, agreeing a three-year contract with the Championship side.  The defender has made 32 appearances for Leeds this season in all competitions, scoring three goals on his way to becoming a fan favourite.

In a recent interview with Four Four Two, the defender was asked: “Is it true that your career took off after tackling Zlatan Ibrahimovic?”

Jansson replied: “Yes, at Malmo we played Milan in a friendly. I thought that if I could take down Zlatan, I could take down anyone. What did Zlatan say? Well, I played with him for the national team and we never talked about it. He’s been my idol since I was little.”

The news that Ibrahimovic is Jansson’s idol may come as a shock for Leeds fans, who might have been expecting a more defensive player given that Jansson is himself a defender.  However, the two share some traits.  Jansson is a player who always gives his all for the team and is also quite eccentric, whilst the same can be said about his idol Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Ibrahimovic is currently playing for Manchester United in the Premier League, where he has scored 28 goals this season.  Jansson will be hoping that Leeds can get promoted from the Championship this year so that he can face his idol on the pitch once again next season.

In the same interview, Jansson also hinted that he could stay in England long-term.
