Grimsby Town head coach departs due to lack of ambition

Sky Bet League Two side Grimsby Town have relieved manager Marcus Bignot of his duties, despite the Mariners being in fourteenth.

The Lincolnshire based side gained promotion to the English Football League last season through the play-offs after finishing fourth in the Vanarama National League table.

Despite finishing 21 points behind Champions Cheltenham Town, the Mariners overcame Braintree Town 2-1 on aggregate, before defeating Forest Green Rovers 3-1 in the Final at Wembley – thanks to a brace from Omar Bogle and a Nathan Arnold goal.

Whilst survival would be the target for many newly promoted Clubs, Grimsby obviously wanted more than their current mid-table position, stating the Club remains to have a “strong ambition to build on last season’s promotion.”

The Club Statement follows on to say: “Therefore, it is with regret that today the Club has decided to release the current Management Team from their first team duties.

“The Board would like to put on record their thanks to Marcus Bignot, Michael Moore and Gary Whild for all their hard work and efforts during the last 6 months and wish them the best for their futures.”

The Mariners have had a good return to the Football League but, with five games in the Sky Bet League Two season left, the Lincolnshire club has begun the search for Bignot’s successor.

Many supporters may have noticed the recent performances of Lincoln City and their management duo of Danny & Nicky Cowley, a pair who were previously linked with the job in November following Paul Hurst’s departure to Shrewsbury Town.

The current Imps management team have turned the Lincolnshire side into a title contending side, with the Imps currently sitting atop the Vanarama National League table – and with the Cowleys close to reaching the Football League, they could well be very high on the Mariners’ watchlist.
