Joe Newell hopes he can make the Rotherham United fans smile again

Rotherham United’s Joe Newell has told the Rotherham Advertiser that he hopes that he can make the team’s fans smile again tonight.

While it had been coming for a while, it was finally confirmed on Saturday that the Millers would be relegated to Sky Bet League One after they lost their match against Fulham. This means that the rest of the season is essentially for nothing, though interim head coach Paul Warne may use the time to see which players should stay with the club after they drop down a league.

However one game that will have plenty at stake is tonight’s match against South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday. While a win wouldn’t matter for them considering they are already relegated, it could seriously damage their hated rival’s promotion chances which would certainly cheer up some of the fans depressed after their relegation was confirmed. And for Newell, his aim tonight will be to win so he can put smiles back on the faces of Rotherham fans.

He said: “I really hope we get something in the Wednesday game because it is the least the fans deserve.”

“It wouldn’t matter if we were top of the league ten points clear or at the bottom where we are. It’s a derby so nothing else matters apart from trying to beat your local rivals.”

“For the fans and for Paul Warne, I really hope we can go out and get something for them to cheer.”

The game will take place at the New York Stadium tonight and will be televised on Sky Sports.
