Former Blackburn player admits wanting teammate to miss chance

Former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Robbie Savage has admitted wanting former teammate Morten Gamst Pedersen to miss a chance, according to the BBC.

Savage was talking on BBC Radio 5 live, discussing the 2006-07 season with Blackburn Rovers.  The former midfielder mentioned that he broke his leg in January 2007 and missed the rest of the season.  Savage had scored goals against Salzburg and Wisla Krakow in the UEFA Cup but missed the Round of 32 games against Bayer Leverkusen because of the injury.

Savage then went on to discuss Blackburn’s FA Cup semi-final game against Chelsea at Old Trafford.  He said: “I remember sitting there and I swear and this might sound horrible, might sound wrong but it was just me.  I was sitting in the Match of the Day studio watching the game thinking: ‘If we win this game I’m going to have to go through seeing the lads trying on their new suits.  I’m going to see the lads in the build-up to the game and you’re just forgotten about’.”

Discussing a chance that fell to Pedersen in the last minute of the game, Savage went on to say: “I remember that ball going over and I was in my head thinking ‘please don’t score’.”

“When he missed I remember inside I was like so delighted but then we lost […] and to see the lads after I felt like such an idiot because the devastation, the chairman John Williams, Mark Hughes, all my mates.”

“In my head for that split second I knew if he scored it, being injured I’d have gone through all that build-up to the cup final you know on the TV, the bus ride, and you’re just not wanted; you’re not part of it.”

Blackburn lost the game 2-1 and Chelsea went on to win the competition, defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the final.  Savage continued to have injury problems in the following season, finding it more and more difficult to get into the starting XI ahead of Steven Reid and David Dunn.

Derby County signed Savage for £1.5 million in January 2008, but he could not prevent the club from suffering relegation to the Championship.
