Ipswich Town, Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth in race to sign non-league star

Ipswich Town, Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth are in a race to try and sign Dorking Wanderers’ Matt Briggs according to a report from the Surrey Mirror.

The 21-year-old winger has been a star player for the Ryman League Division South side, helping them in their promotion battle alongside his studies at the University of Surrey. And with more and more teams sending scouts to the non-league now after several players came through there to play in the Premier League, Briggs is the latest player to be attracting plenty of attention from the EFL.

Three teams from the EFL are said to be scouting the side with Ipswich, Charlton and Portsmouth all being interested in signing the winger, though it is believed that many of these teams want him on trial before making a contract offer. However these EFL sides will have competition from the Premier with sides such as Crystal Palace and Stoke City also sending people down to Dorking to watch the player.

And when the Surrey Mirror asked the club about these reports, the Dorking Wanderers chairman Marc White admitted there has been some contact for their star player. He said: “The interest in Briggs has been constant for the last four months and it’s become very competitive,”

“Portsmouth is a club that ticks the boxes for Matt, as far as the history of the club, the amazing fanbase, the geographical location and also Paul Cook’s history of giving non-league players a chance.”

“Personally, I’ve also heard very good things about Paul Cook and the set up at Portsmouth but Dorking Wanderers are yet to have official discussions with Portsmouth about Briggs, but no doubt we will soon.”
