Championship duo Derby and Barnsley looking at former Jamie Vardy strike partner

Consistency and an eye for goal. That’s what the Mail Online are saying is leading two Sky Bet Championship sides in Derby County and Barnsley to cast glances at Millwall’s Lee Gregory.

Gregory played alongside England striker Vardy when both were up-front for non-league Halifax Town. Gregory’s highlight season as a striker was for Halifax in the National League, the Sheffield-born 28-year-old making 39 league appearances for the Shaymen that season and recording an incredible 29 goals, including three hat-tricks and four braces.

His marksmanship brought about a transfer the EFL and he jumped three divisions in terms of class and ended up in the Sky Bet Championship with Londoners Millwall FC. In his first season at the New Den, the 6ft 2in striker scored just eight goals in a season that saw the Lions relegated to League One.

Last term,  Gregory made 53 appearances across all competitions for Millwall, scoring a total of 26 goals and six assists – 18 of these goals coming in the club’s league campaign. Over the course of this season, Gregory’s 15 League One goals have propelled Millwall to seventh in the table, level on points with Southend United who occupy the final play-off place.

The Mail Online, who say that the Millwall hitman “has a buy-out clause” written into the terms of his contract should Millwall not gain promotion, state that an eye for goal and his consistency in scoring them over past seasons has led to a scenario where “Derby County and Barnsley are tracking” the former strike partner of Jamie Vardy, “ahead of a potential summer move.”

The Mail Online also say that League One frontrunners Sheffield United are also interested in acquiring Gregory’s services.
