Ipswich Town: trio called up for international duty

Ipswich Town have had three players called up for international duty in the next few days.

Kevin Bru has been named as part of the Mauritius squad for their 2019 African Cup of Nations double-header against Comoros. Mauritius play Comoros on March 24 before playing the reverse fixture four days later.

Tommy Smith has also been selected alongside fellow Town midfielder Monty Patterson in the New Zealand squad for their 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Fiji.

The Kiwis play the home leg second on March 28th, with their first-leg taking place four days prior.

“If we come out on top against Fiji, we have another double-header against the other group winner in Oceania,” explained Tommy.

“If we win that, we play the fifth placed team in the South America group for a place in the 2018 World Cup. At the moment, that’s Argentina!

“We know it’s going to be difficult to qualify for Russia but the manager [Anthony Hudson] is confident in our ability against any team.”

Patterson has failed to make a first team appearance for Ipswich Town since progressing from the youth system in 2016, however in 2013 he first broke into the New Zealand development system and has since made 18 appearances in total for the under-17, under-20 and under-23 sides.

The 20-year-old has been fully internationally capped nine times for New Zealand, netting once. Patterson currently plays for Braintree Town on-loan.

Macclesfield born Smith has made 29 appearances for the national side, after previously appearing for the England under-17 and under-18 side.
