Huddersfield’s Wagner shortlisted for major European managerial vacancy

According to German newspaper Bild, Huddersfield Town head coach David Wagner is on a three-man shortlist to become the long-term manager of Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. The German side have appointed Tayfun Korkut as head coach for the rest of the season, but are open to possibilities ahead of next season.

Former United States and Germany head coach Jurgen Klinsmann and highly-rated Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann are said to complete the list of names currently under consideration by Leverkusen. Roger Schmidt was sacked following the heavy weekend defeat away to Borussia Dortmund. They sit tenth in the German top flight with eleven games remaining, five points behind the final European qualification spot.

The club are currently still in the Champions League, although they have a first leg deficit to turn around in order to get past Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. Wagner was said to be linked with other vacancies in his native Germany earlier this season, which is no surprise given his exploits in leading Huddersfield into promotion contention this season.

Of course, if Wagner were to guide the Terriers into the Premier League, he would find it hard to leave. Failure to reach the promised land however would certainly alter the attentions of many clubs domestically and abroad, as he has certainly built up a big reputation for himself in the coaching and management sphere.

Wagner has previously been on the coaching staff at Dortmund alongside friend Jurgen Klopp, who of course manages Premier League side Liverpool. Huddersfield got back to winning ways last night against Aston Villa to pile the pressure on Newcastle and Brighton inside the two automatic promotion places in the Sky Bet Championship.
