Speaking to the Express & Star, Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Paul Lambert says that left back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson is ‘falling short’, and that is why he hasn’t played in the first team since November 2016.
The 20-year-old left back was signed by former head coach Walter Zenga and has made all of his appearances under the former Italian goalkeeper. Borthwick-Jackson has been appearing in the Under-23 side of late, but Lambert says that he needs to offer a lot more to be in consideration for the left back berth at Molineux.
Regular left back Matt Doherty was dropped for the weekend defeat to Reading, but instead of calling the Man Utd youngster into the fold, Lambert elected to play midfielder George Saville in the role. Lambert admits that a lack of fitness is partly the reason for his non-involvement, but Borthwick-Jackson ‘needs more’ to his game,
“I think Cameron is falling short at the minute.
“He would have to show a lot more. He’s doing alright in training but there’s more he has to do.
“It’s a bit of lack of fitness as well, even though he’s played in the under-23s.
“At this moment in time he needs more.”
There was strong talk a few months ago that Man Utd would recall Borthwick-Jackson from his loan away and then allow him to head out on a temporary deal to another club. That did not materialise and he is set to remain with the club for the rest of the season. When returning to Old Trafford, he faces a major moment in his career in what he’ll do next in his footballing life. His time at Wolves has been nothing short of a disaster, and he is still a long way from the first team it seems.
