According to the BBC, Newport County manage Graham Westley has two games to save his job. The Exiles are currently rooted to the bottom of Sky Bet League Two, and just lost 4-0 at home to Leyton Orient, who are positioned just one place above them in the table.
The 49-year-old, who was appointed Newport boss in October 2016, is under contract at Rodney Parade until the end of next season. conceded after the weekend defeat to Leyton Orient that relegation is quite likely. With 14 games remaining in Sky Bet League Two, Newport are twelve points from safety.
Following a board meeting after their latest setback, it was concluded that the former Stevenage, Preston North End and Peterborough United has 180 minutes to keep his job. He has just overseen four league victories since taking over the reins at the club, their latest coming in late January at home to Hartlepool United.
Whilst they have lost their last three games, prior to that they were unbeaten in six, which did include five draws against the likes of league leaders Doncaster Rovers. Nevertheless, after Saturday’s demise, Westley described to the BBC the score as ‘devastating’ and he ‘hasn’t been able to turn that around’, eluding to results since taking charge,
“It was a massive opportunity to get ourselves off the bottom but we’ve left ourselves lying firmly at the bottom with a really abject display.
“It’s a devastating defeat for us. Not just the result but the manner of the performance because if you measure a performance in terms of fight and desire and hunger and appetite we were very low in all those commodities.
“I can justify myself, I inherited a team that was losing and right at the bottom of the league and to date, I’ve not been able to turn that around.
“I am the person who has to take the responsibility and flak.”
