Versatile Derby man Chris Baird reveals his preferred playing position

In discussion with the Derby Telegraph, Derby County’s Chris Baird has revealed which his favourite position is. The versatile performer can play in a number of different roles, but the 35-year-old veteran confirms that centre back is where he feels the most comfortable.

Baird has been enjoying a run in the Derby side of late, initially at right back in the then absence of regular full back Cyrus Christie. He is currently playing at the heart of the defence alongside Alex Pearce whilst captain Richard Keogh and cover central defender Jason Shackell are sidelined by injury.

In total, Baird has made 27 first team appearances for the Rams this season under a few different managers. He now believes his current role of centre back is the one which brings the best out of him,

“I find it physically easier than full back. At full back, I’m not like Cyrus (Christie), who is up and down, up and down all the while. I’m a bit more conservative but will still try to get up and support Tom (Ince) when he needs it.

“At centre-half, it depends if you’ve got two strikers against you or just one – but it’s different. I just find it a little bit more comfortable than the demands of a full-back.

“I know I can jump and compete in the air. I like to play, get on the ball and try to find a pass. I’m enjoying it and I think I’ve done alright so far.”

Baird is again expected to be in the back four this evening as Derby chase a second victory in as many matches when Preston North End are the visitors to Pride Park. Steve McClaren’s side sit ten points off the final play-off position in the Sky Bet Championship.
