Bellusci, Loaned out Leeds United player doesn’t want a Whites return

Loaned out Leeds United player doesn’t want a Whites return

It is safe to say that a love/hate relationship exists between Leeds United fans and Italian defender Giuseppe Bellusci who is currently on loan to Serie A side Empoli. Now, according to website Calciomercato24, he doesn’t want to return to English football.

It wasn’t always like this, the division between the fans and Bellusci wasn’t always evident and in plain sight. The Italian centre-back signed on an initial loan deal from Italian side Catania, before this was then converted into a four-year permanent deal.

Initial indications saw a blood-n-guts style of defending, committed displays that soon began to endear him to many of the Elland Road faithful. These displays, full of commitment, earned him a nickname – ‘the Warrior’ was born. But it wasn’t to last.

Inconsistencies began to appear, glaring errors began to creep into his game and arguments between Bellusci and fans on Twitter soon became common place. The tide of appreciation that Leeds fans had afforded him began to ebb away. Rumours of him being a negative influence in the changing room began to surface, there were even stories of him being chased around Thorp Arch after the sacking of coach Steve Thompson.

Add into the mix a refusal to play after a self-diagnosed illness placed him into the famed ‘Sicknote Six’ and a storming out of training after being told that he’d be a substitute in a game against Hull City and you begin to see just how negatively Bellusci became you’ve viewed by Whites fans.

The best move for the Italian was a move away from the club and that came about with a season-long loan to Serie A side Empoli, a move that has suited both parties well. Leeds had a player removed from the side who was seen as a trouble-maker and Empoli gained a central defender season by two campaigns in the footballing hardness of the Sky Bet Championship.

Bellusci has gone on to make 23 appearances for Empoli this season, becoming their highest rated outfield player, according to website WhoScored.com, with an average rating of 6.91. He has scored once during his stay, whilst also showing that recklessness that Leeds fans became used to by picking up 11 yellow cards.

Now, according to Calciomercato24, who interviewed his agent Michelangelo Minieri, Bellusci doesn’t want a return to English football and prefers a stay in Serie A with Empoli. Minieri described Bellusci’s time at Elland Road as “a very important and beautiful experience that has allowed him to grow,” before going on to say that it has been equally important that he “jumped at this opportunity” to re-experience Italian football.

Speaking of Bellusci’s future in response to a question about his desire to stay in Italy, Minieri was guarded, but hopeful by saying that Empoli has a “right of redemption” at the end of  the current loan deal. Speaking of any potential deal securing Bellusci’s future, his agent said: “At a time when we reach the goals the company has set itself, then we will meet to decide the future.

That future, to be honest, is looking ever more likely to be away from Elland Road for Giuseppe Bellusci, but that seems to be something that will be decided during the inter-season break.
