Sol Campbell is not set for permanent Championship coaching role

Sky Sports reports that former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur defender Sol Campbell will not be linking up with Sky Bet Championship side Queens Park Rangers on a more permanent basis. The former England international is currently helping out with training with the Under-23 and Academy squads on an informal basis.

Last month, Campbell was named as the new assistant manager of the Trinidad and Tobago national team, who recently appointed ex-Swansea, Crewe Alexandra and Wrexham defender Dennis Lawrence as their new manager. Campbell is close friends with QPR director of football Les Ferdinand, and asked for a favour to sharpen up his coaching skills in the interim.

Queens Park Rangers, managed by Ian Holloway, currently sit 17th in the Championship table, seven points above the relegation zone. They face Cardiff City this weekend, managed by former boss Neil Warnock.

At this moment in time, Campbell, aged 42, has been running various training drills with the youngsters at QPR. They will certainly benefit from spending time with someone who was regarded as one of the best defenders in the modern era at Premier League level. Campbell won the Premier League on two occasions, most notable when part of ‘The Invincibles’. He also has four FA Cup medals to his name, including a 2008 triumph when with Portsmouth.

Holloway already has former player Marc Bircham on his coaching staff at Loftus Road, in addition to goalkeeping coach Gavin Ward and first team coach Curtis Fleming.
