Blackburn Rovers sack Owen Coyle

It’s something which has been rumoured and called for by Rovers fans for a while, but it was today officially announced that Blackburn have sacked Owen Coyle as manager of the club.

The 50-year-old was never welcomed with opening arms to Blackburn given the three years he spent at fierce rivals Burnley between 2007 and 2010. He only joined in June, but after only 8 months and 37 matches the Rovers fans got their wish as he has left the cub by mutual consent.

Coyle enjoyed a career spanning 22 years as a striker moving around mainly Scotland but also having a brief 2 year spell at Bolton Wanderers in the mid nineties, a club he would go on to manage after his retirement. Although he could be described as somewhat of a journeyman during his playing days his most notable clubs include Motherwell, Falkirk and his most successful time was spent at Airdrieonians where he made 123 appearances, netting 50 goals.

After retirement his management career began in his homeland Scotland before he plied his trade back in England with Burnley, Bolton and Wigan Athletic. Coyle also spent 2 years across the pond as boss of Houston Dynamo before returning to take charge of The Riversiders.

Blackburn fans’ main focus this season has been on trying to force the departure of the clubs owners the Venky’s. However they haven’t been impressed with Coyle after their performances on the pitch which leave them in 23rd place, 3 points adrift of safety. But the sacking comes after a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United, an odd time to part company with him considering they were struggling for so long.

Whilst Blackburn aren’t in the best of positions at the moment, they aren’t doomed. All they need is for someone to come in and knock the slightly below average squad into shape, it’s a big task for someone to come in and try to achieve, but it’s not impossible.
