Nottingham Forest must play more intelligently

Nottingham Forest head coach Gary Brazil has told the Nottingham Post that his team must be more intelligent if they want to win more games.

Forest played out a thriller when they faced Fulham on Valentines Day but ended up losing 3-2. This was despite them taking an early lead through Pajtim Kasami, with goals from Tom Cairney and Lucas Piazon soon overturning that and giving the Cottagers the lead. Again, Forest started the half on fire with youngster Ben Brereton adding a million onto his valuation with the equaliser, but the game was ultimately disappointing when a Jack Hobbs own goal gave Fulham the win.

Now ahead of their next match against Sheffield Wednesday, Brazil has said that the team need to play more intelligently so they don’t run out of puff by the last ten minutes, which will then cost them valuable points and wins. This is what Brazil blamed for their loss against Forest.

He said: “What we’d like to do and what we’re able to do right now are two separate things at this moment in time,”

“As we work more with the players, and the more opportunities we get to train with them, then that will increase.”

“We’ll be able to do that (press) for longer.”

“You can’t press the way we did in the first half (at Fulham) for the whole game.”

“When we find there’s a little bit of energy goes out of the game, we’ve got to use our intelligence to then say, ‘we can’t press as high, we need to be compact, we need to delay and we need to wait for the opportunity to go and press’. That’s game management. That’s game intelligence.”

“We’ve got enough players on the pitch to be able to pull other players about.”

“We’ve got one or two younger ones in there who are learning, but we’ve got enough senior players to demand that everyone does the right thing at the right time.”

“We can’t stand on the side and tell them exactly how to play all the time. They’ve got to take some responsibility.”

“That will grow.”
